Lisa is a diverse freelance writer, editor and marketer with many years of experience. In addition to her extensive online credits she has also written for publications like American Fitness, Atlanta Business Magazine, and Manhattan’s Parentguide and published three books.

What sets Lisa apart from many copywriters who specialize in SEO, is that she concentrates on the quality of the content she produces for her many clients.

We asked Lisa to share her thoughts on writing, particularly for EzineArticles, and how article marketing has impacted her business.

Lisa, we were attracted to you because you not only write on interesting topics, but actively participate in the EzineArticles.com blog with helpful comments. How have you found that participating in online discussions has helped your own article marketing campaign?

It helps in multiple ways. For one, I can learn from other people who have “been there, done that”. It’s also helpful because people recognize my name and face (now with the new Gravatars) and they associate my brand with someone who is helpful, responsive and friendly. This makes people more likely to read my articles, follow my links, etc.

You currently have over 700 active articles. That’s impressive! How do you decide what to write about?

I am inspired by the world around me- literally. I write on gaming and parenting a lot because I am an avid gamer and owner of a game guide company. I write about parenting because I have four children of my own and I write about writing because that is both my hobby and my career. However, I don’t limit myself to those topics. I write eco-friendly articles because that interests me. I write about crafts and home decorating for the same reason. Sometimes I get an idea from a doctor’s office waiting room or from a question someone asks me on Twitter or even something I saw on the news. Literally anything that captures my interest for even a moment can become an article.

What first attracted you to submitting to EzineArticles.com?

I actually came into the game a bit late. I didn’t really think a writer needed an article marketing campaign. However, I saw the great results my clients were getting with EzineArticles and I thought, “I bet I could do the same!” What better way to show clients I know my stuff than to launch my own article marketing campaign and prove that it can work (and it has).

What tools or services do you find the most beneficial?

I love the user-friendliness of the author interface and my favorite tools are the website tools (author badges, widgets, etc), the auto-Tweeting and the author reports. I like to be able to see which articles are doing well, what keywords are bringing in the most traffic and the most click-thrus and other statistics.

How has using EzineArticles affected your traffic?

My traffic has increased a great deal since using EzineArticles. I get more requests for work and I’ve even made sales of my books because of traffic that came from EzineArticles.

How do you balance writing for quality and quantity?

This is a skill that comes with much practice and being a professional, I have a head-up on other EzineArticles authors but it’s like I always tell people, anyone can learn to do it. Quality is important because when you have spelling and grammatical errors or other problems, your writing loses credibility. However, at the same time, you’re not trying for a Pulitzer with every article you submit. I try to keep my articles short and sweet- focused on one tight point that I want to make. (If there are multiple points, I write multiple articles) and I try to keep it engaging for the reader. This allows me to write more [articles] faster without losing quality.

Any tips you have found particularly helpful since signing up with EzineArticles?

Yes. I’ve learned that the less editing your articles require, the faster they will get through the system. It pays to read all the help tools and look over all the help videos provided by EzineArticles to make sure you’re not making common mistakes. Then when you do have a Problem article, learn from it and remember not to make the same mistake in the future.

Has writing for EzineArticles helped you find clients for your copywriting business?

Yes, actually. I get anywhere from 5-15 requests each week for new work who say they found me from EzineArticles. Not all of them pan out but in my line of work, that’s a great influx without me having to visit bid sites or hunt job boards. I have several regulars now who originally found me from my articles on EzineArticles and they continue to be great to work with and a great source of monthly income for me.

What do you think is the most important thing about an article marketing campaign?

It establishes you as an expert in your field. This is especially true in any Internet business. When someone can Google your name (or company name) and find hundreds or even thousands of articles by you, it shows them that you know your stuff. The fact that you care enough or took the time enough to write that many articles on your topic is a good start. It also builds trust as you are giving away useful information for free. The free advertising pays off but an article with a bio link is much more credible than a “buy now” ad on the side of someone’s website so the credibility is worth even more than the free traffic.

Any tips to lend to other writers?

Time management is very important. You need to snag every opportunity you can to get an article idea or a quick article out. If you don’t make time every day for writing something, you’ll be sitting there months (or even years) later with a bunch of ideas and nothing to show for it. Use article templates and other tools to help you write faster when you do have time to write. Look for article ideas all around you and don’t forget to write them down or record them instantly so you don’t lose them. Inspiration can come at any time (literally) so you have to snag it when it’s there.

Success like Lisa’s is not reserved for only a few select members. It’s available to all of our members! EzineArticles membership is FREE, as are all of the tools and training materials. Take advantage of all we have to offer and you too can reap the benefits of added traffic, increased credibility and more sales!

As a 3-year veteran of the U.S. Secret Service, Jeff Hopeck has known a lot of busy people – in particular, the President of the United States. His goal now as a fitness instructor is to help busy people live healthier lives.

We asked Jeff to share his thoughts on how EzineArticles fits into his philosophy, business and marketing mix.

Jeff, your background is in the Secret Service. How does that experience effect your article marketing strategy?

When I really need to drive home at a particular point, I will reference the President of the United States. For instance, some people really think they are too busy to exercise. My response? If that man can squeeze in 20 minutes each day to exercise and stay healthy, I’m certain every one of us can!

Thus, exercise is about prioritizing your time. You make time to shower, don’t you? Then you should make time for something that can help you live longer, as well.

What would you tell others about the success you’ve had thus far with EzineArticles.com?

First, let me tell you how skeptical I was to sign up for an account with EzineArticles.com! To me, it was just another SEO tool that drove traffic, and I don’t have time to dedicate to every single new SEO tool that hits the market.

WOW! I wish I knew how impacting EzineArticles.com was 2 years ago.

In my first 20 articles, here is a list of the quantifiable results I’ve gotten:

My article “Healthy Eating in 100 Words” is being published in an Ebook in Queensland, Australia.

I was featured twice in a Pennsylvania small town newspaper. These features drove traffic to my blog and resulted in about one hundred book sales!

As my article marketing tools sharpened, traffic to my blog increased significantly and my AdSense account grew exponentially.

You said you’re amazed by the results you get from EzineArticles. How so?

I’m amazed because EzineArticles is a FREE resource. For results this great, one would expect to pay a lot of money.

Where/how does article marketing fit into your overall marketing scheme?

After seeing results so quickly, there is no doubt EzineArticles.com is an effective platform for marketing my blogs. Therefore, article marketing has been implemented into my overall marketing strategy aggressively. On a weekly basis, I try to submit 2-5 articles that are focused on helping busy people live healthier.

I predict EzineArticles.com will remain in my top 3 marketing strategies for many years to come.

In our eyes, you do many “right things right” by utilizing several of the EzineArticles tools at your disposal. Which are your favorites and why?

To date, there are (3) EzineArticles tools that really make life easier for me:

Draft Button – I start writing an article and halfway through I realize that two points I make would be great content for stand-alone articles! I simply start a new article, drop in the title, save it, and then go back to finish what I was writing. It’s that simple.

WYSIWYG Editor - For those who are new to it, it’s a simple way to make edits to your articles. You can bold, bullet, italicize, and much more! No need to worry anymore if you don’t know html code.

Article Reports – You can see how many people read the article, but you can also see what search terms actually got them to the article. Using these analytics helped me tweak my keyword strategy and get more exposure to my articles each time I write!

Any closing thoughts?

If there is one suggestion I can make it would be this: Finish reading this article, and hurry to write your next article! For every minute you aren’t writing and submitting, your competition is writing and submitting. If you want to keep up with the competition, one way to do so is to keep up with your writing! The more you write the more traffic you will get. It’s that simple.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves! Writing and submitting is the key to increased traffic, improved credibility and more sales.

You’re finished reading – now go write and submit your next set of fresh, original articles!

Parker - EzineArticles Expert Author" title="Roger C. Parker" border="0" align="right"> Expert Author Roger C. Parker is in today’s Author Spotlight. Roger is a best-selling author, coach, and consultant who helps others write books, find new readers, and sell more books. He encourages everyone to develop their writing skills: “Writing is everyone’s second job!”

At EzineArticles, we’re always preaching about the need for balancing quantity and quality with your article marketing strategy. Our recommendation is to write and submit a lot of really valuable material.

It would seem that Roger truly took our advice to heart… at least in this interview! His responses to our questions contain a lot of really valuable information – each one could easily be a stand-alone article.

So even though this particular Author Spotlight is longer than usual, we decided against editing it down for length because we didn’t want to lose even one nugget of his sage advice.

Invest a few minutes to read what Roger has to say. We promise it will be worth every second.

Roger, when it comes to writing, you’re all about simplifying. Can you tell us more about that philosophy?

Simplifying begins when a writer asks: “What’s the basic information that readers need to solve a problem or achieve a goal?” Writers tend to want to tell too much; they want to communicate every detail, they go off on tangents emphasizing exceptions rather than core knowledge or core ideas. By focusing on core concepts rather than writing an encyclopedia, writers can do a better job for their readers.

While writing, chunking can play a major role in simplifying and communicating complex topics. Chunking refers to breaking up articles (and books, etc.) into manageable, bite-sized chunks. The two easiest, and most powerful, chunking tools are:

Subheads – Subheads inserted between paragraphs organize complexity and make it simple. Subheads provide a context for the information that follows. Subheads advertise the content that follows and focus the reader’s attention on one idea at a time.

Bulleted and Numbered Lists – Whenever possible, I encourage my coaching clients to replace information in sentences and paragraphs with lists. Like subheads, lists help readers focus on one idea at a time.

Planning ahead is a writer’s easiest and most powerful simplifying tool. Planning before writing takes the stress out of writing. Whether you use outlines or mind maps, once you know the main ideas you want to communicate, “filling in the blanks” becomes relatively easy.

SUMMARY: Plan ahead and determine the basic information your readers need from the article. Then “chunk” it into bite-size parts.

Which EzineArticles tools do you commonly use? Why?

The most important tool I use is the “draft” feature. When I started, I would write my articles online and immediately publish them. Now, I start articles and save them as drafts, for completion at a later date.

The advantages of creating drafts is that it cures my perfectionist tendencies. I tend to write quickly, creating a framework containing the premise, three or four main points, and a conclusion for each article as quickly as possible.

I return to the draft during a second, “polishing,” phase. Separating “framework” and “getting started” from polishing and self-editing has really made a difference for me. I wish I had realized the importance of the EzineArticles draft feature much earlier.

Another EzineArticles tool that has made a big difference for me is the Insert Word feature which strips out unwanted formatting information from articles originally written in Microsoft Word. Word formatting can cause strange line-spacing and other problems that can result in wasted time trying to make everything look right.

A third tool that I am just beginning to use is EzineArticle’s Press Exposure feature that allows me to send out virtual press releases promoting upcoming teleseminars and new content on my Published & Profitable website.

SUMMARY: Use the Draft feature to overcome perfectionism, the Insert Word feature to strip Microsoft Word formatting and PressExposure.com to promote new content and events.

Your articles on EzineArticles.com have received close to 19,000 views. What does that translate to for you (i.e. click-throughs and sales)?

It’s hard to know what is more important; the 19,000 views, the search engine visibility that they have created, or the fact that the process of writing my articles makes it easy for me to add “tangibility” to ideas rattling around inside my head.

Perhaps EzineArticle’s most important role is in helping writers convert ideas and intentions into action. EzineArticles makes it very easy for individuals who have never written to discover the joys and benefits of writing without sending query letters to magazines or setting up a blog or website. EzineArticles makes it practical for authors to create an online platform, or visibility, that paves the way for their future success.

In my case, EzineArticles has provided me with a training ground and way of measuring my website conversions and sales. I now have a much greater appreciation for the “marketing funnel” approach, and am in the process of creating a new series of landing pages and other incentives to better convert EzineArticles readers into coaching clients, e-book readers, and teleseminar/webinar attendees.

SUMMARY: Use EzineArticles.com as a training ground for writing, measuring and evaluating the effectiveness of your content. Then use that information to constantly improve your conversion rate.

You say writing is everybody’s second job. How would that apply to article authorship and marketing?

As Ken Roman wrote in Writing that Works, most people form their impressions of you from your writing. Relatively few spend face-to-face time with you, but your ability to convincingly communicate in writing effects everyone: bosses, co-workers, prospects, potential partners, etc.

The problem, of course, is that you can’t “take a pill” and learn to write. Writing is a learned skill. Except for a handful of grammatical tips and writing shortcuts, to learn to write you have to write! You can buy all the “how to” writing books you want, but until you write, you won’t learn how to write.

Articles are the perfect training ground for writing books, blog posts, newsletters, proposals, white papers, etc. EzineArticles provides a great service by offering a platform that allows anyone to learn how to write better, at no cost or obligation. I stress “write better,” because–by analyzing the reader statistics that EzineArticles provides–authors can learn what works and what doesn’t, in terms of titles, topics, and article content. By comparing their best-read to their least-read topics, EzineArticles provides valuable feedback that writers can learn from.

I’ve seen the impact that EzineArticles has had on several of my clients who, previous to writing for EzineArticles, had little or absolutely no SEO visibility and no writing background. By helping them identify a simple theme for their articles, several have changed their lives. One client, for example, has “run with the ball” and has written over 70 articles in less than 90 days. They have also discovered how easy writing articles can be when you have a system.

SUMMARY: The best way to learn how to write is to… write! Develop a writing system that allows you to write more and write better articles – evaluate effectiveness and improve constantly.

In your eyes, what makes you unique as an article marketer?

First, I’ve always been an insatiable reader. My favorite “childhood adults” had shelf after shelf of Reader’s Digests and I would read them by the hour.

When I graduated to the New Yorker, I was amazed by the ability of article writers like Berton Rouche and John McPhee to capture and maintain my attention for dozens of pages on topics that I wasn’t really interested in, but continued to read about. At an early age I began trying to analyze where their mysterious power comes from.

Likewise, when reading books like the late Ed McBain’s 47th Precinct series, I was spellbound by his ability to “lock you in” with the first sentence of the first paragraph.

Secondly, I’m a frustrated teacher. I wanted to be a college history professor, I wanted to be “Mr. Chips.” Until, of course, I realized the realities teaching; pay, meetings, rules, committees, parents, grading papers, etc. Writing articles and mentoring other article writers allows me the pleasures of teaching without the need to dress up in a tuxedo to attend an alumni tea at the college president’s house, etc.

Finally, and this just occurred to me, I want to know how things work. My grandmother used to give me clocks to take apart. I have always been interested in “processes.” I followed the building of the St. Lawrence Seaway and I remained fascinated by the Air Traffic Control system that brings order out of chaos. My interest in “order” and “why” was reflected in my books about WordPerfect and Microsoft Office, because I wanted to share a simpler approach to software mastery than the usual “information overkill” combined with “lack of relevance” for those who were “Dummies.”

I received a great deal of pleasure, incidentally, from writing the “…for Dummies” books that I wrote.

SUMMARY: Embrace a writing style and niche that excites you. Be an insatiable reader and discover the subtle ways authors in your field of interest grab the reader’s attention. Avoid information overkill and lack of relevance.

You’ve sold over 1.6 million copies of your 38 books, yet you only have 37 articles on our site. Even more ironic is the fact that with an average of over 500 views each, your articles obviously work! What’s up with that?

Wow! You don’t pull any punches, do you!? ;-)

Unfortunately, unexpected events have a way of interfering with plans. I was quite excited by Jeff Herring’s “100 Articles in 100 Days” challenge, and was writing one a day when my wife had a heart attack and had to have bypass surgery. The weeks that followed were a blur, and–probably as a reaction to stress–I was unable to write as much as I had hoped during the month that followed.

I was especially frustrated because, as part of the direction that EzineArticles and Jeff Herring provides, I had completely revised my approach to articles. Basically, in order to meet the 100 Articles in 100 Days challenge, I had to completely change the way I approached article writing. Instead of the long articles I have been writing most of my life, I learned how to write faster and more concisely. I forced myself to chunk my previous “omnibus” approach to articles into shorter, more focused articles. I was doing well, until I “fell off the wagon” in April.

Now that I realize the power of short, focused articles, and have become more efficient in my writing habits, I plan to reach my 100 articles goal and continue to develop ideas and promote them on EzineArticles.

But, for now, my biggest satisfaction and reward has been observing how my writing and coaching clients have benefited from EzineArticles. Ask me again in 60-90 days, and I’ll have a different story to tell!

SUMMARY: Realize the power of short, focused articles. Become efficient in your writing. Take up challenges like the 100 Articles in 100 Days Article Challenge and others.

You’re reading this sentence, so obviously you’ve invested the time to read all of Roger’s extremely insightful interview. Now make that investment pay off today by writing and submitting a few more high-quality, original articles that embrace some of his philosophies.

While you’re at it, why not leave a comment about what you’ve discovered in today’s Author Spotlight!

Chatfield, Ph.D." border="0" align="right"> Expert Author Cheryl A. Chatfield, Ph.D. is in today’s Author Spotlight.

Cheryl is a writer, teacher and inspirational speaker based out of Burlington, Connecticut. While these are impressive credentials in their own right, what really attracted our attention to Cheryl was the editorial quality of her articles.

In less than 6 months as an EzineArticles Expert Author, she has managed to already receive Platinum status and serves as a role-model for creating original, high-quality, problem-free articles.

We asked Cheryl to share some tips for writing great articles.

What drew you to our attention is the editorial quality of your articles. What’s your secret?

“Thank you for the compliment. Reading each article carefully and being sure to review it more than once helps to assure me I’ve made few errors. Proofreading and rewriting are essential skills. In addition, I care about what I say and I know that readers will judge me by the way the article sounds.”

What EzineArticles tools do you find most useful?

“I love the article reports. I track the views and URL clicks on each of my articles. In the almost six months I’ve been with EzineArticles, I have been able to determine which of the two categories I write for produce the best results, as determined by the number of people visiting my website. While some of my articles have more views, I can see that the ones that produce the most clicks are best. The tools provide that data for me on a daily basis and I use the information to analyze my overall success.”

What kind of traffic do your articles generate for you?

“Much of my website traffic comes from the articles. I have been pleased with that response. While I continue to work toward attracting more traffic, I see progress. I have had direct responses from people who obviously read the articles and were motivated to contact me.”

What advice would you offer somebody thinking of becoming an EA author?

“First, I would suggest that a potential author determine the desired outcome. Is it just to have an article published, is it to have someone read the article (writers often feel very lonely in their work), or is it to drive traffic to a website resulting in sales. Those are different goals. Once that is determined, I would recommend just writing some articles and analyzing the responses. A person has nothing to lose to try. And the only way to improve writing is to write. This provides that opportunity with a built-in audience.”

In your eyes, what makes you unique as an article marketer?

“I am a writer, so that helps. I understand marketing and providing benefits to the reader. I constantly work on improving the quality and the content of my work.”

You’re fairly new to EzineArticles. What’s your impression thus far?

“I love the chance to write and have my articles read by others. I see this as a necessary sales tool for my work. What better way for a writer to promote her work than to be able to write to do that?”

Thanks Cheryl for being an Expert Author and a talented member of the EzineArticles community!

Oftentimes it’s easy to get so focused on quantity of articles that we overlook the quality of what we write. As Cheryl points out, writing high-quality articles is equally important to the overall success of your article marketing efforts.

Bottom Line: Write lots of high-quality articles! ;-)

EzineArticles Expert Author Edward Weiss is in today’s Author Spotlight.

Along with being an Expert Author, Edward is considered by many to be the Internet’s favorite piano instructor. His site offers step-by-step instructions and video tutorials, plus a guarantee that anyone can learn how to play New Age piano.

And check out these stats! Over 270 approved articles and almost 400,000 views since February, 2005 – that translates to 300 views per article per year! At his current rate this is what his numbers will look like in (10) years:

Over 600 Approved Articles

More than 190,000 Article Views per Year

In Excess of 1.8 Million Total Views

We had a chance to ask Edward about the keys to his success as an Article Writer and Marketer:

1. Over 270 articles – pretty impressive! How do you keep feeding the article hopper?

“That’s a good question. When I first noticed EzineArticles a few years ago, I already had about 100 or so articles written. These were all for my newsletter and when I found out about article marketing and your site, it was easy to just submit them.”

“After that, I committed to writing a few articles a week. Now, I just write articles to match keywords to my target audience. For instance, last Christmas I wrote an article titled “Free Christmas Sheet Music for Piano” and that got over 8,000 hits in less than 3 months! So it really is all about targeting the right keywords.”

2. What EzineArticles tools do you find most useful?

“I’d have to say the ease of actually submitting an article. I like your WYSIWYG editor and since you’ve made improvements, it’s even easier to submit articles. I also like the stats feature. It lets me know which articles are drawing interest and which ones are duds.”

3. What kind of traffic do your articles generate for you?

“A ton! And that’s probably because I’ve written a lot of articles targeted to my niche ‘New Age Piano’. In fact, EzineArticles is ALWAYS in the top 5 referrers for all the traffic I get. And it’s the best kind of traffic. When people click on one of my ads, it’s good. When people visit my site after reading one of my articles, that’s infinitely better! Why? Because they are warmed up to what I have to offer.”

4. What advice would you offer a newbie author?

“Focus your efforts on really being an expert in your niche. I know this is said a lot, but the more you focus your article marketing, the more readers see you as THE expert in whatever niche you’re in. Fortunately for me, I’m the only one (to my knowledge) doing what I do; which is teach New Age piano online.”

“Also, set a goal. Five articles is not enough to establish you as an expert author. Sure, it’s a great start but I’d say write at least 2 articles a week. After a year, you’ll have more than 100 articles and that’s something.”

5. In your eyes, what makes you unique as an article marketer?

“I’m constantly searching for opportunities to write articles that will reach my target audience. I use the Google Insights for Search feature. This gives me a very valuable look at what people are searching for and what the hot searches are. It also tells me the geographic locations for where people are searching. An invaluable tool I highly recommend.”

Thanks Edward Weiss for being an Expert Author and a talented member of the EzineArticles community!

One parting thought: If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll note that our impressive 10-year growth prediction for Ed factored out his (100) initial articles. That means that his average growth rate is (34) articles/year… that’s less than (1) article/week. Think you can write just (1) article each week? If you’re not already, give it try. In a very short time, you’ll start to see numbers like Ed’s!
