How to Read Your Article Stats Data

The amount of statistics available to you right from the View My Statistics section of your EzineArticles account can seem downright overwhelming at first.

However, if you take a little time to sort through and understand what it all means, you’ll have the skills to sift through piles of data to find those nuggets of strategic knowledge to fuel your article writing efforts.

Let’s take an in-depth look at the article writing analytics available to you. This could be just the thing to trigger a new level of understanding of the impact you’re having on a variety of levels.*

Reviewing Anayltics in Members.EzineArticles.com:

To get started in analyzing your article stats, access them through your Author’s Area. To get there:

  1. Log into your Member Account
  2. Hover the cursor over the Author Tools drop-down
  3. Select View My Statistics from the drop-down

This brings up the Stats Dashboard.

Stats Dashboard

The Stats Dashboard is the homepage for all of your stats. It’s broken into three main sections: Article Stats, Keyword Referral Stats and Author Stats:

  1. Article Stats – This area gives a quick overview of all articles and authors on your account. You can see a summary of your stats on the left:
     

    • Total Views – Article views give you a quick idea of how your articles are performing overall based on how many people have seen all of your articles.
    • URL Clicks – URL clicks show how many times the URLs in your articles were clicked by readers. This stat is a key indicator of how engaging your articles are. To increase URL clicks, ensure that your URL leads to similar content as your article.
    • Click-Through Rate – CTR represents the average number of URL clicks per 100 views (as a percentage). The higher the CTR, the higher your rate of successfully converting readers into prospects.
    • EzinePublisher – This number indicates how many times a human visitor to your article has been interested to “pick up” or republish your article. Having your articles picked up is an excellent way to exponentially increase your article’s exposure. Keep in mind that ezine publishers want your high-quality, evergreen content. This stat does not indicate who picked up your article or where it was published.
    • Emailed – This shows the number of times readers have emailed your articles to friends.
    • Comments – This number represents the number of comments you’ve received on your articles.
    • Votes and Rating – This shows the number of times someone has rated your article and the average of all total ratings on a scale of 1 to 5.

    Moving on, the middle part of the Article Stats section is a graph that shows your total CTR (click-through rate) over the past few months. Then, on the right is a list of your most-viewed articles.

  2. Keyword Referral Stats – The middle section of the dashboard is filled with keyword referral stats for your most-viewed articles. It shows keywords that readers used to find each article. If you look closely, you can see how many times a word or phrase was used to find each article.
     
  3. Author Stats – The bottom section of the dashboard shows stats broken down by the authors on your account. The graph gives a visual representation of profile views over time as well as how many articles each author has published.

Now, this information is great, but it doesn’t provide all of the answers on how to improve your overall article writing strategy. In other words, it doesn’t offer actionable data because it represents an accumulation of information across your entire account. It doesn’t represent the smaller decisions you make that can have a great impact. So, let’s move back to the top of the page and access the individual stat categories, starting with Article Stats, through the Stats Shortcuts on the top of the Stats Dashboard.

Article Stats

This page shows a stat breakdown of each article on your account. You can filter the list by author name. From here, you can see all of the same information that was at the top of the dashboard, except it’s broken down on a per-article basis. You can sort the list by clicking on the header for each stat category. This data can help you pinpoint the types of content and writing styles that generate the most highly viewed/clicked/rated/etc. articles. If you click on an article title, you’ll see a breakdown of more stats for that article, including:

  • A graph that represents the article’s views over time.
  • A table that also displays the article view data.
  • A list of the links in the article and how many times each one was clicked by a reader.

Below that is a breakdown of the most popular keywords or keyphrases used to find the article. This is incredibly powerful information because it tells you what terms people are actually searching for in search engines when they find your articles. Plus, it becomes more powerful the more you write and submit. With this information you can do your own keyword research and find a never-ending stream of data-backed keywords to focus on.

Author Stats

Now, let’s move on to the Author Stats section by scrolling to the top of the page and clicking Author Stats from the Stats Shortcuts buttons.

What you see on this page is similar information from the top of the dashboard, but it’s filtered by authors on your EzineArticles account. From here, you can upload an author image and click on Author Details to see a graph of how many people have visited your author bio.

Keyword Referral Stats

Lastly, let’s move to the Keyword Referral Stats page by clicking Keyword Referral Stats from the Stats Shortcuts buttons. This tools shows the most popular search terms used by readers to find your articles through search engines from all of your published articles.

It’s displayed in what’s called a “keyword cloud,” meaning the keywords are clumped together and the size of the words are weighted by frequency. The bigger the font of the keyword, the more times you’ve used it in an article. So this gives you an idea of the keywords you have focused on most. Depending on your writing strategy, this information can direct what keywords you incorporate in your future articles.

Understanding your article writing analytics is vital to the success of your article writing campaign. Knowing which of your articles are performing better than others and knowing why will help you write new articles that are laser-targeted to the demands of the readers in your niche.

I guess I’m wondering about the Monthly Article Performance email messages that only list the same articles over and over that are from way-back. Isn’t it supposed to be that month’s articles?

Apart from that, I don’t think this post tells us much about ‘leveraging’ the information we see in our stats. How about giving us more advice on how, exactly, to do that? Obviously, focusing on specific keywords that are identified as popular for future articles is one.

The stats don’t always help. For instance, I have several articles on one topic targeting the same or similar keywords, yet 1-2 articles are getting far more views and better stats, with no apparent reason why. I can only assume that the better articles received more exposure on your site.

Without knowing the exposure rate, some things cannot be analyzed and in fact can lead to an incorrect conclusion.

Sylvia – Your Monthly Article Performance email continues to show the same articles over and over because those are your top performing articles of all time. Until other articles usurp them, they are going to continue to show up on the report as your top performers. However, the keyword phrases to reach that article are specific to the previous month only. The phrases used to reach articles often change a little bit from month to month.

Of course you get the previous months top performing articles too if you had views in the previous month.

In your case, the top 3 articles for the previous month were always the same as the top lifetime articles. This means the top 3 lifetime articles you have continue to out-perform all the other articles on your account from month to month.

Thanks, guys! For a while I could never seem to grasp what the eZinePublisher statistic meant. It’s great that we have this tool here, as I have never seen it on the other directories I frequent.

I guess being “picked up” can be somewhat equivalent to a video being embedded somewhere on the web, and hundreds of people deciding to place it on their own websites. Talk about viral!!! I will be sure to pay more attention to eZinePublisher from now on. Thanks, again!

Susan,

The EzinePublisher stat shows how many times a human clicked on the EzinePublisher view of your article which indicates an interest to republish it. That’s all we’re tracking. We are not tracking who republished it or where. Use Gigalerts or Google Alerts to track this.

Thanks for explaining so clearly. I used to review my stats and focus on click through rates, because that is what shows, that my article was interesting enough for the reader to learn about me/my offer.

A video like this made other aspects clear, especially Ezine publisher stats.

Please tell me where the ‘republish’ button is?

I have reprinted other authors’ article and have had to copy and paste (including the resource box and author info, of course) because I can never spot the ‘publish this article’ button.

Is it a button? Is it a link? Where is it?

Kathryn – Just scroll down below the article to the “Share this Article” box and click on the “EzinePublisher” text link. This will take you to a page that contains the entire article in plain text and HTML versions. Plus there are fields for summary, keywords and the article URL. At the top of the page are full instructions for proper republishing.
