Volleyball Expert ArticlesI’ve seen this sort of thing happen quite often:

A high visibility niche vertical site will link to highly relevant content… in this case, Hayley Merrett’s Volleyball Articles.

The moral of this short story: Some times your EzineArticles don’t get reprinted or syndicated, but rather you get high visibility exposure from contextually related authority sources.

For the past 2 full weeks, we’ve been preparing the ground work to release almost 100 new niche categories that have been requested by our members, studied by our team, and researched to death for viability.

Today, I wanted to pause to contemplate for a moment a bit of self-destructionism:

In a world where everyone is flooded with information, does it still make sense for EzineArticles to have individual categories?

The Pro’s to 500+ Niche Categories:

  • Members hold back quality article submissions due to their perception that we don’t have the right category for their article…thus, more categories = more article submissions.
  • We send nearly 2 million monthly permission-based opt-in emails to 82k members of the niche categories.
  • Tens of thousands of daily visitors find us via category RSS feeds.

The Pro’s to Infinite Niche Categories:

  • “Infinite Niche Categories” really means no categories at all any more and EzineArticles becomes a tagonomy of user-decided unlimited niche categories.
  • The look of the site shifts from being perceived as a directory to being perceived as a more comprehensive knowledge depository.
  • Email alerts move to become incredibly more complex, but simultaneously, the information delivered is more precisely tuned to the requesters interests. Same for RSS based on tags, not categories.

Ok, your turn to voice your opinion:

Does EzineArticles continue adding categories per the plan already in progress or do we abandon all ye plans and go for the infinite niches model?

Last week while I was in Miami attending MarketingSherpa’s Email Summit, EzineArticles Expert Author Shawn Collins was leading Affiliate Summit West 2008 in Las Vegas.

Got a minute to post a comment on Joel’s blog, defending EzineArticles.com about how hard it is to go through our human review process to get your articles accepted?

Some have broad-stroked the issues as if they were black & white (which they are not); but it’s good for everyone to see why we continually raise the quality standards that content must meet to be accepted on EzineArticles.com.

Always open to your thoughts. Thanks!

Inactive Member Audit Results

A week ago, we began a segmented email campaign to identify inactive members who created accounts and did nothing, for the purpose of terminating accounts with no activity *AND* author names locked up could become available for new members to use.

Every day, we’ve watched the activity on the 18k accounts flagged for possible termination if they don’t create action. Today, I have some internal stats to share on this campaign:

  • Out of the 18k emails sent to registered members, 517 members logged in so far.
  • Out of the 517 that logged in, 346 (67%) submitted 1,000s of articles. Yeah!
  • Out of 18k emails, 11.2% (2,015) members bounced back hard undeliverable.
  • Those 2,015 members were emailed to their EzineArticles inbox 2 minutes ago that their accounts are suspended.
  • In 3 weeks, if no activity, every account with no activity that is currently Suspended-Email-Bouncing will be terminated.
  • Monday March 10th, we’re scheduled to terminate 17k accounts for no activity and no response to our request to become active.

Overall, we’re pleased that 2.8% responded and of those members re-engaging EzineArticles, 67% of them submitted thousands of articles. That’s the upside. The downside is that we’re 5k+ articles behind in human review and 550+ member support emails in our ticket queue waiting for response…so we apologize if turn-around speed is sluggish this week.

Can I Sell Them?

Julian from Romania writes in and asks:

“Can I sell the links in the Resource Box of my articles that are listed with EzineArticles.com?”

Answer = Absolutely NOT.

Should we find out that you’re selling links in any article you have listed with EzineArticles.com, upon verification of fact (such as a public post in a popular webmaster forum (What? You didn’t think we read and track what others are saying about us?) where you offered to sell links in your articles), we will suspend your account pending further investigation leading to a most likely account termination.

Selling links in your articles is not cool and one of the quickest ways to lose your account with us.
